Check Point 10

Describing our topic:

Topic: Our focus was on collecting clothes and blankets for the Salvation Army. We (Emmanuel, Shakira, Lina and Alofa) named ourselves ‘The Seekers’. We asked staff and students to donate goods and by Tuesday 28th November we had enough to give to the Salvation Army in Wycola Ave, Hei Hei.
Action Plan:
What enabled us to do this were the Salvation Army for letting us deliver the clothing/blankets to their store and also the staff and students for donating their goods. There were no disablers that we came across.
Our action:

Our impact in our community:
As I have said before our group has made a " small but massive impact " in our community. By donating clothes to the Salvation Army, they are able to allocate clothing/blankets to people especially the homeless that need them the most.

Reflection:
At the very start of PBL I really enjoyed picking out what topic our group was going to focus on and then planning/writing out our action plans. Half way through the past couple of weeks I started to dislike filling out all the check points and blogging but apart from that I have enjoyed PBL.
Learning about homelessnes in PBL has made me realise that most homeless people don't just end up sleeping on the streets or in parks just because of low income but also because of things like war, poverty, mental health problems, drug issues, health issues and domestic violence.

Taking action- step 6, 7 and 8

Our first action plan was to contact the City Mission and get a time to meet and discuss about what 'things' would they want us to donate to them. Our group came across a disabler which was that the City Mission was wanting toiletries instead of clothing. We then turned to our second action plan and decided that we were going to donate to the Salvation Army.

Our group didn't end up making our third and fourth action plan happen.

We are glad with our outcome because we have made a ' small but massive ' impact in our community by donating second hand clothing so that people who need clothing will get to have some. If it wasn't for the help from our teachers we also would not have done it without them.

Below is our evidence of us with the clothing we have collected and then donated to the Salvation.
Massive thanks to the teachers for helping us to make this possible!

Our plans of action! - step 5

These are 'the seekers' action plans to help fundraise and donate towards the homeless people in our community.

Steps needed to achieve the goal.
What will help us achieve this goal?(Enablers)
Possible barriers and how they could be overcome.
Who is responsible for this step?
Date this step will be achieved by.
Discussing with the city mission on what would be suitable to donate and ask them for some advice on how we could  achieve our goal and hopefully they will accept our statement. If they accept We will ask them on what places would be the best to place a food donation box etc.
Getting city mission’s permission  and advice for what sort of food/ clothing would be needed etc.
If city mission  doesn’t accept our request we could always try another charity .
Caleb is responsible for this step because he is the person getting in contact with the city mission.

Discussing with the salvation army on what would be suitable to donate and ask them for some advice on how we could  achieve our goal and hopefully they will accept our statement. If they accept We will ask them on what places would be the best to place a food donation box etc.
Getting the salvation army’s permission  and advice for what sort of food/ clothing would be needed etc.
If the salvation army doesn’t accept our request then we could always volunteer for another charity to help out the homeless people.
aleb is responsible for this step because he is the person getting in contact with the salvation army.

  • Ask mr aitken for permission to run a raffle and sell raffle tickets.

  • Gather items to put into baskets.
  • Buy items that Hornby high students will be happy with . This will then encourage them to participate.
Getting students to understand what our aim/ goal is and need their participation/teachers can participate as well.
Is the students don’t end up buying raffle  tickets then we could ask church members, neighbours etc

Stick posters around the school to advertise the event we will be running (40hr Famine)
Getting students and possibly teachers to participate.
Not enough students being informed about the event then we could make a 40hr Famine page on social media like Facebook, Instagram etc.

Homelessness

At Hornby High School we were introduced to 'Project Based Learning' (PBL). This is a learning system that helps students become independent learners as well as discussing in groups about a certain project that has been chosen and widen up our knowledge about the project by using the power of research. After we have an understanding about our subject we were told to take action and make a positive impact on society.

I chose homelessness because this is one of the massive issues that both individuals and groups within society all around the globe suffer from. By making a small positive impact within our community can help them realise that 'there's always a light at the end of the tunnel'. Three other people I have paired up with are Emmanuel, Lina and Shakira. We formed a group together because we all have the same idea on what we would focus on and how we will take action to try and make a small difference. We named our group 'Seekers', meaning to find a way to solve an issue.

We then got given some questions to answer about our project:
Who is affected? - People who are unemployed and not accepted into society just for being themselves and just people with a low income.
What are the issues? - The issue is that some people who are either unemployed or earn a low income can't provide themselves or family with the necessary needs like food/ water, housing /shelter, health care etc.
When did this start and how is it progressed? - Homelessness has been a major issue for centuries and continues to be an issue today. About 1.6 people lack sufficient housing
Where is this happening? - This is happening worldwide
Why is this happening? - This is happening because of war, poverty, mental health problems, drug issues, physical health issues and domestic violence.
